In December 2024, OITF founder Jim Denevan was honored to be selected for a one-month art residency at CAMPO in the small town of Garzon, Uruguay. Besides art, the town is famed as a winemaking center and as the site of Chef Francis Mallman’s renowned restaurant Garzon. With the help of a large herd of cows, mulch to temporarily block sunlight and the willing hands of several local residents, Jim spent the month creating the world’s largest “I love you” drawn in the grass.

The artist residency included incredible daily meals prepared by CAMPO’s resident chef Eliza Parchanska with produce harvested from the fields of resident farmer Emma Galea. When not cooking for artists at CAMPO retreats, farmer and chef spend most of the year growing food and cooking meals at Hotel Corazon on Mallorca. Conversation inevitably led to the idea of bringing the OITF table to the island off the coast of Spain.

Being a student of celestial events, Jim soon discovered that a total solar eclipse was due on August 12th and had the best possible timing: 16 minutes before sunset between the main course and dessert, the traditional gap where people get up from the table to stretch and take in the sunset before returning for the sweet finish.

On a scouting trip to Mallorca, Jim found the ideal spot for the table atop the dramatic Tamuntana coastal range overlooking the sea (think Big Sur, but in the Mediterranean), an ideal vantage point to view the eclipse on the horizon.
