We return to the shores of Bayou La Batre, where local lore includes a 1927 killing over oysters. Back then, Alabama’s wild oyster industry was booming, and the deadly dispute was over the lease to an oyster patch off what was then called Myrtle Point. Nobody had yet imagined farming oysters here, but fans say Murder Point oysters are still worth killing for.
Lane Zirlott comes from five generations of shrimpers and fishermen who have worked these Gulf waters since the late 1800s. Lane traded boats for beds (oyster beds, that is) and set out to grow the world’s best oyster in his own backyard. The result is a buttery, briny, deep-cup oyster with a cult following far beyond Alabama.
Returning to the field kitchen are husband-and-wife chefs Alex Perry and Kumi Omori of Vestige in Ocean Springs, Mississippi, whose thoughtful, minimalist take on Southern cuisine earned them a spot as James Beard Award finalists for Best Chef: South in 2024. Once again, we gather where land meets sea to celebrate the story, the salt and the shellfish.

Due to the nature of the events, no refunds or credits will be given if the Participant is unable to attend. However, tickets can be transferred to someone else. Please contact us at reservations@outstandinginthefield.com with the new guest’s information at least 24 hours prior to the event, or tell the guests using your reservation to give your name at arrival. Transferring funds for your tickets is your responsibility. In the case of an event being postponed due to circumstances beyond Outstanding in the Field’s control, Outstanding in the Field will reschedule said event and all purchases will be honored for the rescheduled future event date.
