Urban farming invites city residents to experience good food grown close to home. Flowers, vegetables, and the daily rhythms of care create spaces of beauty that encourage both contemplation and participation. Phyllis Bowie founded Sankofa Urban Farms with the mantra ‘’Soul food is medicine,’’ inviting Fillmore families to experience the power of growing their own fresh produce.
Chef Fernay McPherson, celebrated for her Texas soul food, grew up in the neighborhood and is excited to use the farm’s harvest to create a truly soul-stirring meal. Co-chef Nelson German joins us for his third Outstanding in the Field appearance— after cooking beachside and on a mountain top, he now brings his talents to the city garden. Nelson's unorthodox culinary style blends his Dominican heritage, African roots, and Mediterranean and Asian influences with a deep love of local, sustainable California ingredients.
Together, we'll set the table in honor of Phyllis’ work, taking time to savor the harvest and celebrate the message of the garden.

Purchase Policy
Due to the nature of the events, no refunds or credits will be given if the Participant is unable to attend. However, tickets can be transferred to someone else. Please contact us at reservations@outstandinginthefield.com with the new guest’s information at least 24 hours prior to the event, or tell the guests using your reservation to give your name at arrival. Transferring funds for your tickets is your responsibility. In the case of an event being postponed due to circumstances beyond Outstanding in the Field’s control, Outstanding in the Field will reschedule said event and all purchases will be honored for the rescheduled future event date.
